Iceland travel guide

A waterfall in beautiful Iceland

If you want to visit a land of magical landscapes then Iceland is the place to go. The country boasts the most amazing and unusual scenes of glaciers and geysers. It is a fairytale setting and when you see this country you will understand why it has inspired artists throughout the centuries. In summer the breathtaking scene is made even more beautiful when you see the Northern Lights or aurora borealis. You will soon understand why these are named after the Roman goddess of dawn. This country is not as cold as you may think, either in summer or in winter. The air is clear and fresh as Iceland has the lowest population density of any country in Europe.

Your visit to Iceland will not be complete without a swim in the steamy Blue Lagoon, near Keflavik. This is a geothermal spa with blue-grey water. Another must see are the whales off Snaefellness.

Whale, shark and puffin are Icelandic dishes that you may like to try but, if you prefer, there are many fish restaurants to be found and these serve fish that has been freshly caught off the unpolluted shores. Skir is yoghurt and when you try it you will realize why this sweet and tasty dessert has been traditional for over a thousand years.

The capital city of Iceland is Reykjavik, and your trip to this country will not be complete without a visit there. The city is lively at night and there are plenty of bars, clubs and restaurants. The Perlan is a well-known landmark; its viewing platform is free to visit and from here you can see amazing views of the city. This modern building is just over twenty years old and was built to store the natural hot water that heats the city. It is however aesthetically beautiful as it has a glass dome under which is a rotating cafe and you will want to dwell here for some time.
