Zero Film Festival began a couple of years ago in Los Angeles. It's meant to counteract the influence of the huge film companies that dominate the California motion picture industry. Instead, Zero is a celebration of indie films and their writers, producers, directors, and actors. It's a tribute to those who believe in and finance their own films.
This film festival is celebrated for a week in early December and, true to its intention, it holds screenings throughout the downtown Los Angeles area in buildings you wouldn't always associate with the film industry. Some are in small theaters, while others are in warehouses and retail spaces. There's lots of free music around that week, and the whole thing feels like a big party for those who are free thinkers.
Due to the Los Angeles event's popularity, a Zero Film Festival New York was launched in 2009.
